The New Normal

We are now in another year where the pandemic is still a real threat. I’ve heard people say, “I’ll be glad when things get back to normal” but what if the new normal is still not normal?

We should know that by now that in life things don’t always work out the way we’d like them to. So how do you handle life’s “Why?” Why has this happened to me? Why can’t things just work out as planned? Why am I still going through this?

One of my favorite Christian groups, MercyMe, penned a song entitled “Even If” Written by Bart Millard / Ben Glover / Crystal Lewis / David Garcia / Tim Timmons.

The Message

The songs speaks of the struggles and disappointments of life. Life is often challenging, but it’s how we stand through these times that make us overcomers. What gets you through those times when nothing seems to go right? How do maintain “hope” when there seems to be no hope? The main chorus of the song says,

I know you’re able and I know you can

Save through the fire with your mighty hand

But Even if You don’t

My hope is You alone

I know the sorrow, and I know the hurt

Would all go away if You’d just say the word

But even if You don’t

My hope is You alone

There Is Hope

The writers of the song want us to know that there is a “hope” that is greater than the problems we face in life.

2Corithians 12:8-9 (AMP Translation)

8. Concerning this I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might leave me; 9 but He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.” Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me.

2Corithians 12:8-9 (Message Translation)

“My grace is enough; it’s all you need.

My strength comes into its own in your weakness.”

Now this is not a fairy tale or imaginary super hero, it is a living hope of a loving God that can bring you through any challenge you face in this life. However, this hope is grounded in the knowledge and understanding that God is faithful to those who trust and believe in Him. If he’s brought you out of difficult times before, He can and will do it again.

Remember Paul says, when we are weak God’s strength becomes the prevailing strength. In the “Message” translation:

2Corithians 12:10

“I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.”

So, if the “new normal continues to be not normal” we must be able to say:

But Even if You don’t – My hope is You alone

And like the old hymn says “It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul!
